The Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is devoted to producing surgeons whose credentials for teaching, service and research are excellent. A superb, dedicated teaching staff has been effective in accomplishing these goals. The suburban location of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and its affiliate teaching institution St. Peter’s Medical Center provide an environment that satisfies the varied cultural, athletic and educational needs of the medical community. The graduated residents are located geographically throughout the United States. They have remained on the cutting edge of orthopedic knowledge and have made numerous contributions to the orthopedic literature. They are fulfilling our mission by maintaining excellence in orthopedic surgery within their communities.

Very nice and approachable guy who is available and allocates time for residents.
Didactics / Teaching
Weekly fracture conference is a big plus here. Attendings get very involved and provide invaluable input and feedback to each resident while they present their week's cases. Great learning experience as many of the week's cases are broken down to understand why things were done a certain way, etc. Ground rounds, journal club and cadaver labs run are well-run too.
Operating Experience
Second to none. Rotating through several institutions throughout medical school, the experience here is awesome with the chief residents displaying great knowledge and confidence while being able to operate independently. Operative time starts early, I observed many of the PGY-2's actively involved in cases, often doing most of the work in simple operations.
Clinic Experience
Excellent. Exposure to a wide range of patients both in the underinsured clinic as well as the private office.
Research Opportunities
Although opportunities are abundant, the staff support and resources are limited to getting a project rolling.
Residents
Many of the residents are great guys who are hardworking, motivated and good to be around with. Many provide ample advice and support one another (including students).
Lifestyle
Blue-collar program with a bottom-heavy, work-hard/play hard type of mentality.
Location / Housing
New Brunswick is a fun town with many college and young professional-scene bar, lounges, and restaurants. Cost of living is affordable and there is easy access to NYC, Hoboken and the beaches.
Limitations
Research support.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
Great clinically-oriented program whose residents complete residency very well-trained with the knowledge and confidence of being able to operate independently. Great fellowship lands in all subspecialties. Many of the attendings stood out in regards to the support and dedication to teaching (especially the Pediatric Ortho group)

Dr. Gatt is very nice guy who is very approachable. Seems to have a good relationship with residents.

One of the best I've seen during my medical school rotations. The chiefs felt confident tackling many of the cases and felt comfortable leading the operation. Operative experience starts early, I observed many PGY-2's actively involved in cases on a daily basis.

Adequate exposure. Residents see a diverse range of patients while spending time in clinic as well as private office hours.

Opportunities are abundant however it is rather difficult to get a project moving along. Limited research support.

New Brunswick is a college town with a lot of good local bars (both young professional and college) as well as some lounges and clubs. Not terrible cost of living expenses. Close to NYC (train, car), Hoboken and beaches.

Having done a sub-I here, very very solid program. Residents complete residency well-trained with the knowledge and confidence of being able to operate independently. Residents get solid fellowships. Many of the attendings, especially the pediatric orthopaedic group are extremely supportive. It's a work hard, play hard type of place -- many of the residents are great guys who are motivated and know how to have fun and enjoy life outside of the hospital .

Staff comprised of private attendings, so they are voluntary resident teachers. This allows for resident autonomy and responsibility in caring for orthopaedic patients.
Didactics / Teaching
Monday morning fracture conference. Thursday academic half-day including lectures, M&M, MRI conference, and grand rounds. Informal journal clubs at local restaurants.
Operating Experience
Unmatched operative experience of any program. Intern year, 50% of your time on the ortho service is spent in the operating room. PGY3-4s are primary surgeon on many cases.
Clinic Experience
Excellent clinical experience with early independence and responsibility. As an intern, you will be treating fractures in the emergency room and trauma bay, as well as managing the orthopaedic service.
Clinic is half-day per week and resident run, where you will see follow-ups and book your own patients for surgery.

Research Opportunities
Supportive faculty with dedicated research staff, quarterly research meeting and available statistician. Research is resident driven & there is a dedicated research rotation.
Residents
Tight-knit and supportive. Very high expectations of each other and the orthopaedic service.
Lifestyle
Many of the residents hang out outside of the hospital. 4 weeks of vacation per year.
Location / Housing
Most residents either walk to work or have a 10min drive. 1 hour to NYC or Philly. 30min to the beach.
Limitations
Research is not pushed on the residents, so it has to be independently driven.

Excellent program with fantastic operative experience & close-knit residents.

Good teaching, both in and outside operating room.
Didactics / Teaching
Several opportunities for teaching and didactics done each week. Faculty are very involved and do majority of teaching. Thursday didactics can include arthroscopy lab/ anatomy lab along with didactics.
Operating Experience
One of the highlights of program. Very hands on and busy without being overwhelming.
Clinic Experience
Resident clinic- either general or peds- 1/2 day a week. Allows residents to take full ownership of patients, including the indications, surgery, and follow-up of patient.

Can be difficult to get projects started

Good group of residents, close-knot, work well together, and enjoy being around each other. Seniors also take time to teach juniors.

Work hard, but not overwhelmed.

In New Brunswick- certainly not the best location, but easy access to NYC and Philadelphia. Several housing options from apartments to houses.

Well-rounded program for both the operating and clinical experience. Lots of operating volume in all subspecialties and very hands-on. Residents come out extremely well prepared for fellowship and practice.

Approachable, informal relationship with residents. Good mentor and patient instructor.
Didactics / Teaching
Fracture conference every Monday morning. Rotating Pediatrics, Sports, Hand, Joints, and Spine conferences Wednesday mornings. Grand Rounds Thursday morning followed by didactics or arthroscopy lab.

First assistant in the operating room on a daily basis starting as a PGY-2

Expanding opportunities with Rutgers University. 1 required research project with 6 weeks dedicated research time as a PGY-4.
