avg surgical exp. in us was created by pdoc
hi,
i just started 4th year residency (of 6 years) at a university program in germany. i was wondering how much you guys in america operate, because i have the feeling, that you are trained much better than we are.
how about just giving an overview of your surgical experience and your residency-year.

in my case i was able to do about 40 osteosynthesis (including a lot of ankle, wrist and clavicula. 1 ETN, 2 PFN, a couple of pseudarthrosis-revisions. about 5 athroscopies, 5 hip endoprothesis and about 10 to 15 forefoot things (hallux), the rest was soft tisue stuff (about 30) and about 30 plate removals.
thats it.
i am really curious, what the average in usa would be.

we are not allowed to operate alone. there always has to be an attending in the room. but these are the cases i did from the beginning to the end (under supervision). i also did a couple of 100 first assistences, but we dont count them.

I can only speak about our program, but we do about 500-1000 cases/year. In the first 1-2 years, mostly first assist. Later, primarily as the surgeon under supervision with help from the attending (depending upon the case, of course).
