Interview Invitations 2011 - 2012

Calm down. Yes this is a competitive field, everyone knows this. But a two point difference on USMLE means nothing. And of the programs on this list, the majority will send out several waves of invitations. As time goes on people will have several conflicts in interview dates and they will start to cancel and then more invitations will be offered. And believe me, it doesn't matter if you get the first interview on a program's list or the last, once you get an interview you're all on a pretty equal playing field and the "fit" for a program and the level of apparent douchebaggary will be the deciding factor in rank. It is a random process, just try to relax, the interviews will come.

Your input is helpful and appreciated. I feel the forums are helpful in getting dates for interviews and a sense of what to expect, but it is a small sample size of applicants posting information. You are the umpteenth person to say that the week of Thanksgiving and thereafter is a high-volume period and I'm getting the sense that is more trustworthy advice than invite forums from this and prior years for the reason I stated before.

Based on how this process is working and comparing invite to rejection dates from previous years I get the sense we are in "make sure the high-priority applicants schedule an interview here" time. As you stated when people begin to cancel as their calendars fill up or they decide "X" number of interviews is enough, more invites will be sent to the "middle class". It seems that people post early interview email dates on this forum and 4-8 weeks later the program sends rejections. Obviously something is happening in those 4-8 weeks that warrants leaving the doors open. Now obviously some programs slam the doors shut early, and they can because people will not turn down their interviews or they are not concerned about interviewing 100 people. Either way the list here is not necessarily an indicator of these programs being done or nearly done sending invites (not to say some aren't done already).

So I'm gonna go have a beer, be happy I've only been officially rejected from 10% of the places I applied thusfar, and keep waiting for my first interview email. If in 2-3 weeks I'm still waiting for that invite, I'll go ahead and start talking to my advisor about finding a job, because I'd really rather not scrambling for general surgery...bones>bowels any day.

This may all be hearsay and speculation, but it makes the days go by with less stress.
