yale question: yes, emailed contact early on and she said they were not required for app to be considered.

next question about southern schools: look at last years thread and check the dates that interview invites were sent out for each program. pretty similar so far.

Same here.
I was 'ranked to match' at pitt last year.. no interview from them this year.

Go figure.
Mayo is the first duplicate. I almost don't want to go

Iliiz, did you like Mayo when you interviewed there last year?

Replied by on topic mayo is mayo.. it's a
mayo is mayo.. it's a great place to train.. but I think it's one of those specialized places that you really have to decide if that's what you want.

it's highly family oriented.. I guess it has to be. It's cold and lonely up there.. not much around. That's why it's good to have a wife (or husband) or something along those lines...

The every day case load (and hot trauma) is very low.. lots of revisions and complex cases, etc. etc.

Like every program.. it has its plusses and minus.. and those pluses, etc. are really determined by you.. the applicant.

Like, they follow the preceptorship model. You work with one attending at any given time. Not as part of a team. I'm sorry, they're not attendings, they're 'consultants'.

They have a beefy orthopaedic curriculum in your second year (i believe) where for 6 months (or something like that) you only learn orthopaedics.. It's like going back to med school.. for othopaedics.

Because it's mayo, a lot of the medicine aspects of what you're doing are taken care for you. Ie, if you have a patient with diabetes, they automatically are managed by another team. On one hand, that's great, because in a situation like that, you get to focus on ortho.. on the other hand, you could be construed as getting soft because you're not doing it yourself.

It's push and pull with all of the programs. The truth is, they're all great in one way or another. Some may not work out for you for whatever reason (it's in a big city, blah blah.)

When I approached this last year.. in my mind I went down and analyzed every program to the most bitter detail. I approached it systematically. In the end, every program was totally different, so much so that you couldn't analyze it. But, despite these mega differences... they're really all the same!

So you go with your gut.. which place gave you a good vibe. Who cares about all of the other hooplah. It doesn't mean anything. Sure, going to a top 10 place is nice...but how much you want that needs to be determined by you, and what your career goals are.

But in the end... be happy to have anything, don't split hairs.

I'll be happy to train at East Bumble University (which is even further away that Bumble University
