Dr. Dietzel was quiet but seemed alright, tough to read. Too may other surgeons to mention but all seemed competent and great.
Didactics / Teaching
Daily sessions, monthly journal club, Xray conference etc. Good variety and a well done teaching service. The interns definetly got picked on pretty bad and the seniors were a little mean and over the top at times but all in the interest of learning.
Operating Experience
Decent, but rom what I saw generally as a 1st assist. Not many of the attendings were giving up any autonomy to the residents which I thought was odd. I also saw a lot of double scrubbing cases.
Clinic Experience
Good, wide variety from Sports to Trauma to General and all subspecialities inbetween. Not a lot of clinic to be done.
Research Opportunities
Onsite biomechanics lab that was spine heavy but not really producing much from what i could see. there seemed to be a huge lab to resident disconnect which is unfortunate considering the potential. I talked with the lab PhD and he seemed kind of bummed on the situation.
Residents
Great group, really enjoyed them, very academic but also fun from what i could tell.
Lifestyle
Poor to fair depending on the rotation. Often the evenings were avalable to read. Call was intereting becasue they cover so many local hospitals that you could end up driving a lot.
Location / Housing
Cheap but in my Opinion Lansing is a terrible city. Lake Michigan isn't too far away.
Limitations
Location and not a lot of surgical autonomy.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
Good experience and would have been a fine residency to graduate from. Overall this was #4 on my list.

Dr. Dietzel is the program director, great guy, very quiet, but gets you involved in the OR when you spend time with him. About 20+ attendings at the 3 hospitals in Lansing that you cover. All are great teachers for the most part, let you operate, ect. Many attendings are fellowship trained, thus coverage for all the specialties exists.
Didactics / Teaching
By far, one of the best didactics I saw during all my rotations. Each day they some type of "lecture" in the AM. Fracture conference, attendings giving lectures, seniors pimping the 2-3 PGYs, ect. They know their stuff, they read every day, very impressive.
Operating Experience
The operative experience here is amazing. Spend a lot of time in the OR at all the hospitals where you take on a major role (not just retracting). Seniors doing their own cases basically, teaching the juniors, ect. As a student, you are able to help out and participate in the OR. When you spend time with Dr. Dietzel's office, he goes to the surgery center (no residents allowed); thus you get 1on1 and get to do a lot of cool things.
Clinic Experience
Each week as a student, you will be assigned an attending to work with (and resident). Thus, you go to the office hours with them and operate when they operate.
Research Opportunities
Apparently they are revamping their entire research department. They have full time staff to help you with projects; seems as if more residents are getting involved with research and the opportunities expanding.
Residents
Great group of guys (and girl). Seem to get along very well with each. Push each other hard; seniors expect a lot out of the juniors in terms of doing their jobs, reading, and learning ortho. Mix of single and married residents (some with kids)...hang out outside of the hospital. Thus, basically something for everyone.
Lifestyle
In Lansing @ MSU campus. Lots of nightlife, sporting events. Hospitals in town are 5 minutes apart; thus not much time spent driving. They do cover a hospital about 30 minutes away.
Location / Housing
Student housing provided. Free food (best food out of any program). Residents seem to live downtown, east lansing, or okemos (basically by MSU and east).
Limitations
To be honest, this program is one of the best overall programs probably in the nation (MD and DO). It provides a great clinical experience, operative experience, and a solid educational foundation. So limitations...um...none =D.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
As mentioned above, one, if not THE best ortho program in the country. Many fellowship trained attendings. Seniors are getting great job opportunities and very awesome fellowships. Some past seniors are at Cleveland Clinic for joints, San Diego (Chargers) for sports...this year, one senior is going to do Sports with Dr. Andrews.

The staff is great. Dr M, the program director, is great to work with and really a inspirational kind of guy. The majority of the other attendings are very approachable and hilarious to work with.
Didactics / Teaching
Good overall didactics with monthly journal club, daily AM OITE review, anatomy labs, and access to top notch research.
Operating Experience
Phenomenal! The graduating chief last year had almost 800 cases in just that year alone. Most of the residents average between 500-700 cases a year (per a presentation given during our interview) and all subspecialities except tumor and peds are in house. Trauma is also solid with two fellowship trained trauma docs and out rotations at Indianapolis for Trauma, and Cincinatti for Peds.
Clinic Experience
Also good, residents do every Wednesday afternoon as a clinic day and average about 15-20 patients with the resident directing all the care.
Research Opportunities
Excellent. Plenty of research potential with Dr. Cholewicki from Yale and the program director is very supportive of research. Also on-site biomechanics lab and active collaboration with MSU radiology, medical, and veterinary schools.
Residents
Good group of residents. Most are fun to work with and all seem to get along well. From what I've seen most land top-notch fellowships: Trauma at Indy, Joints at Cleveland Clinic, Trauma at UCLA, etc.
Lifestyle
Good for a community program. Most residents are married but this program is located in Lansing which is the largest university in Michigan. The city is between 100-200K with plenty to do and access to great music.
Location / Housing
Cheap - Michigan as a state is in an economic down turn and housing is inexpensive and easy to find. Alot of the residents own a home and there is a plether of homes for sale in the area.
Limitations
the only limitations that I could percieve are the paucity of research experiences available and/or location. But, I am not really looking for a very research heavy program and I love outdoor activities so this place will rank highly.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
Excellent. This program has you operate early and often with exposure to multiple orthopaedic sub-specialities. The PD is amazing and truly is a visionary who places a high value on resident education. The other residents are mostly cool to work with. And if research is your thing than this program boasts the most dedicated and fun research team to work with. Overall if you match to this program you will have great opportunities in academic or community medicine.
