not a huge omega fan but its a nice watch. I have been wanting a particular Baum and Mercier for a while and of course, a dream watch of a Pateke Phillepe something i can pass on to my future son

You can never go wrong with a Rolex, I am told. I understand these have appreciated in value even during the current economic downturn. And they're pretty nice.

I own a Tag and I never wear it at the hospital...it will get soiled in dirty patients and plaster. save your money (unless its no object) and pay off your loans. Your pager will be all the clock you need.

A couple of things. First of all, I agree with Hapless Hack. As a resident, you are either splinting, scrubbing in, hanging traction, ie things that can ruin a watch like this. Plus you always have a pager and/or a cell phone. Second, I don't think anyone needs a watch this expensive. Especially with med school debt.

All that being said, I do own a Speedmaster Professional (I definitely didn't buy it. Let's just say I have awesome in-laws). There are a few things you should probably know. This watch is not an automatic, that means that you have to wind it every day. Second, it's not waterproof. Can't go to the beach or pool with it. Other than that, it's a quality watch. Looks good. It has the cache of being the only watch worn on the moon and still the only watch approved by NASA for EVA. Plus it's different from Tag and Rolex.

So, if you have the money burning a hole in your pocket, it's as good a watch as any, unless you were planning to use it as a dive watch.

well of course the watches they give away are fake....so jeff smoker was given one of these immitation Omega watches....

I mean for god sake a $3000 watch that isnt waterproof or self winding...
clearly he is sporting a fake...his toothless inlaws have scammed him into taking their daughter out of the carnival and into the world of orthopaedics...

I have to disagree. Every orthopod needs a fine, reliable watch. Even during residency while heavily indebted from med school (like myself). Used a chunk of my intern year tax return to buy an omega seamaster. It's a SICK watch. Was between this and the rolex submariner, a watch that multiple residents at my program have. The people who own the rolex say it loses several minutes every month and doesn't keep accurate time. It also costs twice the amount as the omega seamaster. I haven't had to readjust the time on my omega seamaster once. It's waterproof to 300 meters. I only take it off to tie it to my scrubs when scrubbing in. otherwise I cast, splint, etc with this thing on. Great knockaround watch and can be worn casually or with a suit. Speedmaster is another great watch, but a touch more expensive than the seamaster.

Baume and Mercier doesnt compare to Omega or Rolex. Patek Phillipe is on a whole new level from all the rest of them. Wait till you're retired after 40 years of practice to get that one.
