This is a great orthopedic core knowledge text. It is designed as a core curriculum for orthopedic residents and I would suggest that every intern buy and read this book before starting the second year. Although, this book wasn't out until my last year in residency, I have read it recently to use as an orthopedic review following my fellowship and have found it extremely useful. Each section contains "Pearls" that are common "pimp" questions and are frequently on the OITE. Each chapter also ends with "Sample Questions" that are similiar to the OITE. Reading this book from cover to cover is highly recommended.

Replied by on topic Right now you can purchase
Right now you can purchase this textbook: Baratz: Orthopaedic Essentials from the publisher Thieme at www.thieme.com for $74.25 after shipping. They have the book discounted 25% and then you get an extra 10% off until August 31, 2002. Shipping is not quite $7 in the usa. Its a steal considering everywhere else it is $100 and backordered 2 weeks.

Replied by on topic I have been searching for
I have been searching for a general ortho textbook suitable for a med student and have decided that this book may be my best bet. I am an MS3 and am trying to get this book read before my ortho elective/away rotation. I know from previous posts it seems anatomy is the most important thing med students need to know. So I am curious if you guys think reading this book at my level is a worthwhile investment of my time?

thanks.

Replied by on topic I'm a 4th year, and
I'm a 4th year, and I bought the Baratz book. As far as ortho sub-I's (I did a whopping five) & reading go, I felt that the Netter Ortho book & either the Perry or Koval fracture books were important basics. For presentations, I used Wheeless online. Though the Baratz book had good reviews, I didn't like the organization and ended up using it only peripherally. I would spend the money instead on Hoppenfeld's surgical exposures or physical exam. The former helped tremendously with pimp questions in the OR.
