This should be one of the first books an orthopedic resident should buy to keep at home. It is also very valuable for medical students to use to understand the anatomy during cases (nail those anatomy "pimp" questions). It provides exposures for 80% of what you'll see in orthopedics.

Does anyone know what the online access for this book gets you? Does it simply give you an electronic version of the entire book or just some practice tests or more pictures/video?

The electronic versions are available in various websites.search ebooks in google.

For a medical student or intern i think Hoppenfeld, is a bit too much..I would suggest medical students and interns to go through, Snell's clinical anatomy or Keith L Moore anatomy..

As an Orthopaedic Resident, Hoppenfeld is a must.

I agree with whoever said this above, buy Hoppenfeld's as soon as you decide you want to go into Ortho. If you are a med student and want to read up for cases, it's the first thing you should read. Ask the resident the day before which approach they will use in the case, find it in Hoppenfeld's and prepare for the anatomy that way. I, too, still use this book often as a chief.
