If you are going to get one book on spine it has got to be the Rothman text. It is by far the most comprehensive and had the most complete list of luminaries in the field contributing. It's not the best book to use as a resident reviewing for cases or testable knowledge though. The accessible knowledge you need for that is probably better found and easier to acces in OKU spine 4 or Orthopaedic Surgery Essentials Spine. That text is about 10 years old now but has a lot of the basic knowledge easily accessed for juniors and med students who are interested. I believe the second edition will come out in 2016.
