Step 2 Impact? was created by 321ortho
Do programs screen candidates for interviews based on step 2?

I know step 1 cutoffs exist (230, 240, 250, etc), but if you had a good step 1 with a very competitive application and got a low step 2 score what is the potential impact?

Obviously it's not going to help and can only hurt you when programs look at the big picture when rank listing. However, I'm wondering how devastating it could be to one's chances from the get go. Similar threads were discussed over a decade ago, but competition and stats are ever evolving. Thanks for the feedback; I'll pm with details.

Programs look at the following when deciding on interviews

Most Important:
-Step I

Still Important:
-AOA?
-Step II (is it higher than Step I?)
-Clerkship grades (compared to your classmates)

Of variable importance depending on the program:
-Research
-Your region / potential ties to the program (like did you do undergraduate there? do you have family there? did you do an away there? etc)
-"Your Pedigree" in terms of medical school ranking and undergraduate ranking

Less Important:
-Everything else

After getting an interview programs look at the following:
-How normal you are / how well do you interview
-Your demonstrated interest in their program
-Some combination of the above

In summary, yes it matters but obviously its not a deal breaker. Its just another part of the equation.
