I scrambled into a great pediatrics program after not matching into an MD ortho residency (huge family issues, location, thought I'd be happy as a pediatrician). I have given it my best, but primary care is not for me. I am a surgeon, nothing can change it.

How do I switch from a pediatrics internship at an MD institute back into an ortho track?
- finish the intern year and reapply in the 2010 application season?
- how do you do rotations as a doctor?
- Can I repeat internship?

I am willing to take as many years as needed to get into ortho and will go anywhere. What advice does anyone have?

Thanks

I'd like to hear thoughts on this as well.

I'm a PGY1 in FM.

I discovered ortho very late in 3rd year and fell in love during 4th year. When I matched in FM, I felt as if I had missed my calling.

Now I'm liking clinic and inpatient services less and less and severely missing the OR and my prior ortho experience.

What should I do now?
Like most FM residencies, I'm in a smallish town w/out a nearby academic center. There are plenty of orthopods to work w/ in town and a FM sports med program as well.
So what's the best way to get into ortho now and back into the OR?

Thanks.

Replied by on topic I am currently finishing my
I am currently finishing my intern year in Internal Medicine and in the same boat as well. I did an ortho rotation during the beginning of my 4th of med school and enjoyed it but ultimately applied IM because I was just not quite ready to make the leap into a surgical field. I had gone into med school always thinking I would go into Cardiology. I realize now that I definitely have a surgeon personality. Do any of you all have any thoughts on the best way to go about this? [/i]

hey guys. switching to an ortho residency will be a huge uphill battle. if you already did a do internship you are still in a predicament because almost all do ortho programs are linked and have a somewhat of an ortho emphasis. You also almost always have to have rotated at a program for them to interview you and i dont think you can really do a rotation because they are reserved for students. you really have to know somebody and have a lady luck on your side. being at the right place at the right time is a big thing and there is no way to predict this. there are many more things to consider. if any of you want to discuss this just send me a pm. i cant say that everything i tell you is correct but i know how hard it will be. there is some hope in all of this b/c i do know of a success story. let me know if you have questions.
