The Division of Orthopaedic Traumatology in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking highly qualified physicians who have completed orthopaedic residency training and want to continue their surgical training as an orthopaedic trauma fellow. UAB is one of the highest volume trauma centers in the country and the only ACS level 1 trauma center in the state of Alabama. With over 4900 trauma admissions annually, this position will allow you to see a wide variety of blunt and penetrating trauma while also gaining exposure to post-traumatic reconstruction including nonunion, fracture related infection, and deformity correction. The focus of the program is on providing multi-disciplinary care to poly-traumatized patients. Our fellowship follows an apprenticeship model and typically includes 4 OR days and 1 clinic day per week. Time in clinic will be divided evenly throughout the year between each faculty member. The fellow will be an integral part of the team caring for the inpatient service and in the OR. Our clinical team includes 3 faculty members, 3 NPs, 4 RNFAs and 5-6 residents. Operative autonomy will grow throughout the year and will be tailored to individual skill level. Our goal is for surgeons who complete this fellowship will possess the skill set to practice at a busy level one trauma center. One completed research project is required for graduation from the program and collaboration with the research fellows and coordinators is encouraged.
