Delaying fellowship?

Curious if anybody currently applying for fellowship, or any faculty that reads these forums has an opinion on this?

Do you think someone delaying fellowship for 1-2 years and going into general practice would negatively impact their chances at a good fellowship spot? This is assuming a good fellowship application (research, and letters) from a well respected program that has a history of placing residents into top fellowships across all specialties.

The reason I ask is my personal situation (significant other in medicine on a different timeline who's unable to move, plus small children) might force this situation upon me.

Wanted to bump this now that there's a little more activity currently with everyone applying for fellowship. I am just curious if anybody has any personal or second hand experience with this? I know it's not a normal path through training, just trying to figure out what long-term effects, if any, this would have on fellowship chances?

Appreciate any advice!

I personally think it would be very hard to be out making some money and being your own boss to go back and do a fellowship. I suspect you may lose your interest in going back after being out a couple of years. Given your situation, it's probably best to stick around while the SO finishes though. I think as long as you stay connected somehow with your program and you can still get great references and phone calls, you should be OK.
