spouse on interview trail was created by sundog1
Three of the residency interviews I have been fortunate enough to have received offers from have suggested I bring along my spouse/significant other for events and networking opportunities. Just curious if anyone has any insight as to how common this is versus my luck in getting interviews at the 3 programs who value this more highly than others. I'm asking because I would like to revisit my budget in accounting for extra plane tickets, etc. If any current residents have further information surrounding the role of the spouse at the interview it would be greatly appreciated.

Sundog-
As someone who is married with kids I thought that my spouses input was invaluable when it came time to create a rank list and decide on where we would like to spend the next 5 years. The thing that helped me is that we were within driving distance of most of my interviews, so the family came in with me. I'd go to the social and interview while they would check out the town as a place to live. Obviously if kids weren't in the picture my spouse would have at least attended the social (which I saw many others do at almost every interview).
Marrying your spouse was the most important decision you've ever made- residency will be high up on that list so you better have his/her opinion highly regarded on the matter. That being said, you don't need to break the bank to make that happen. If it is feasible, try to take him/her to the ones that are highest on your list, or if you go back for a second look. That way there is at least some perspective. Good luck.

Our program invites spouses along to the dinner the night before. I'd say if a program invites the spouse then its ok for them to come along. If they don't then probably not so much.

Its not so much the spouse we care about, we just want your spouse to see the city and program and decide if it would be a good fit for both of you. I would recommend making her happy.
