OITE Eligibility was created by thra
I tried to search about who can write OITE. Obviously, as it sounds, it is the in-training exam for orthopedics but can preliminary surgery residents write it?
From hearsay, I believe, if the Program director approves a resident from surgery, he/she can be registered for OITE.
Please share what you know regarding this.
Thank you

hey,
so after i didnt match my first time i looked into this as well. the program where i did my prelim year had an ortho program but would not let me take the OITE with them. so i contacted my medical school and they were the ones who said i could take it with them but in the end i couldnt because my program wouldnt give me the time off to fly back and take.
i think all interns do bad on the OITE (unless youre some freak genius) but it might look good on your part if you show initiative and try to set it up. some say it wont help either way and might even hurt if you do horrible (below the average score of the program you are applying too) so might be something you would really think about.

Hey OS, that's cool to know. I also got your pm, thanks so much for the information.
What do residents use to perform considerable on the OITE in PGY1?

I also did not match the first time around. I was doing a prelim year at a program where they also had an ortho residency program and after clearing it with the gen surg program and the ortho PD, I was able to take the OITE. I studied hard for the exam and did very well percentile-wise for my YIT. (YIT 0)

Keep in mind that not many interns are studying hard for this so if you put in a lot of time you can do well. The score reports were back by the time that interviews came around and I scanned my score report and e-mailed it to the placed where I would be interviewing. They all commented on my scores, and I think it helped my chances. I recommend this to anyone who did not match if they are allowed to take it. This is especially true if you had poor USMLE scores as it would alleviate potential fears that you lack the test taking ability to eventually pass the ABOS (and reflect poorly on the program). If you do poorly, just don't tell the ortho programs that you took it. Very little down side.

This also had the added bonus for me that the gen surg program did not require me to take the ABSITE (good for me and undoubtedly good for the program's average)
