How is anatomy run at your program? was created by gff122
Hi everybody,

I'm currently helping my program director revamp the anatomy course for residents at my program. I was wondering if I could get some ideas on how anatomy is taught at other programs with a cadaver. Which dissector book do you follow and do the residents who dissect present to the rest of the residents once or twice a month? Are there programs who incorporate Hoppenfeld's into their anatomy dissection and how is this done? Any input on this would be very helpful. Thanks!

we use both grants and correlate surgical approaches to Hoppenfields. we start the academic year with weekly dissections and anatomy presentations and also do our OITE review concomitantly.

We start our academic year going over OITE. Once the test is over we focus on anatomy. The interns are responsible for dissecting a region of the body (and then presenting it to everyone) as the 2's overlook and make sure the dissection and the preparation for the presentation is satisfactory. Meanwhile the 3's and 4's dissect out approaches on the cadaver on the opposite side. We do this for about 6 weeks (shoulder, hip/thigh, hand, F/A, pelvis, spine, etc). Seems to work well, as everyone seems to get something out of it.

So at our program we have anatomy every friday. First we have an overview/presentation of radiographs for the respective area we're working on - this is usually done by our PA fellows, but could probably be easily done by PGY1s. Then we have anatomy presentation with the cadaver. We do it kinda joint based (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, etc). The PGY2s do one side (just anatomy), and the PGY3s do the other with surgical approaches. Then they present to the rest of the residents. We have 4 each year, so each pgy2 presents a different portion - osteology, vasculature, muscles, nerves. We have staff present during the presentation so there is always some high quality pimping. Either before or after our anatomy stuff (depending on when available) we have our MSK radiologist go over MRIs for the same area.
