I would appreciate it if anyone could explain to me what the best steps are to enter an Orthopaedic residency in the US as an IMG; I gather it is very difficult!

I am a UK graduate, 4 years since graduation, worked in T&O for 1 year and also completed the compulsory 2 years of general medicine and surgery rotations everyone has to do after graduation. Also spent about 1 year teaching at reputable University.

I am about to sit all my USMLE steps so that I have my scores by September.

Is the best thing for me to do, supposing my scores are good, to enter research for a year or two, get to know faculty and then apply for a position or should I apply for preliminary surgery and try to get a PGY-2 position. PGY-2 position seem to reserved mostly for US citizens that why I thought research may be the way forward.

Thank you for reading that lengthy piece, and I would be very grateful for any advice.
