I'm at a community program in the midwest doing a prelim surgery year. When I didn't match ortho, I scrambled into a program that offered to give me a month of orthopaediccs, which starts next month. Obviously the basics of being a good intern, like getting notes/dc summaries/helpful on rounds/etc but what else should I be doing? I would like to ask some of the attendings for rec letters, but I doubt I will interact with much other than to report back consults or random floor updates and even then, I will be reporting mostly to a chief. On the plus side, per the current ortho interns, there are plenty of cases that go uncovered (small program) resident wise, so I would like to get my feet wet so that in the rest of the year, I can get some face time with the attendings. Is there anything else I should know or does any former prelims have some beneficial advice?
