My program just started an elective block for PGY4s and we can spend one month of that for an away rotation. I am going to do a total joint fellowship and would like to pursue a month doing something in that realm, but would be interested in all opportunities.

So far, I have looked at ortho overseas and the AAOS international website but am really looking for something in the developed world (Europe, Australia, etc.).

Any thoughts?

Replied by on topic I would email Christian Heisel
I would email Christian Heisel in Heidelberg, Germany. He was a Schmalzried fellow who is now the chief of adult reconstruction over there. Really nice guy. The other option would be Berne, Schwitzerland. Moritz Tannast did a fellowship with Stephen Murphy in Boston and he may be helpful arranging something. Finally, Koen de Smet in Belgium or Damian Griffin and James Richardson in the UK are some other options. All of them are well connected in the US. There are definitely options to do an elective in Europe. What about Canada? The Vancouver group or London, Ontario groups are strong in joints.

Replied by on topic how about Australia?
Thanks for the tips, Tiger.

Does anybody have any connections in Australia? I had heard that it's getting more difficult to go there from the U.S., but would love to look into it. Any help is much appreciated.

I would try Andrew Shimmin at the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group if you are interested in joints. www.andrewshimmin.com.au/index.html

Replied by bigjuice on topic For Australia, another big name
For Australia, another big name is Don Howie. I had emailed him and was going to spend a month with him, but it was during a time when he was going to be out of town for several months. Google his name with adelaide australia and it should come up.
