The guy I know did his step 3 years ago. He was working as a unaccredited house officer in an orthopaedic residency. Basically you work and take call like a resident but aren't a resident. He was essentially milked for his time at this institution for the past 6 years and offered to renew his contract but finally resigned.

Replied by on topic The reason I asked about
The reason I asked about step 3 was something different. If he has not taken his step III exam, he has not completed the USMLE series. Then, he passed more than 7 years from his step I and could retake it. USMLE requires completion of the 3 steps within 7 years. If one does not complete the exams in 7 years, he/she will have to retake them all.

Replied by on topic another thing to consider would
another thing to consider would be to shoot for a sports med spot via FP or PM&R...assuming your friend would be ok not operating, but specializing in an ortho-type field. just a thought, hope it helps.

hey micky. sounds like a tough situation for your friend. he should check out the detroit medical center residency program. they had a strong 40 person residency that recently shut down due to staff issues. most of the old staff left and some great new guys have stepped in. now they have to start all over and began with a new 4 man resident program just this year. to most people this doesn't sound so good but for your friend it may help. some of the guys in the program were in similar situations. the program is already expanding and will be bad ass real soon. please reply if you have any questions
