Residency Curriculum Question??? was created by chee68
Given that Pediatrics is the only requirement from the RRC, how do your programs do their pediatric rotations???? i know some do 6 straight months, or 2 blocks of 3 months at certain years in the residency. Just curious, because it sometimes becomes difficult to keep the whole program 'on pace' to get all the peds in, without doing a bunch of months during your senior years.
thanks for the input

Our program does six straight months during PGY-4. There is also some elective time for those who want more.

Given that Pediatrics is the only requirement from the RRC,

I know is a bit of a technicality, but this requirement is really from the ABOS, not the RRC. The RRC is just the middleman (there official rules are less strict, but it's in their findings when they review a residency).

Here are the real requirements for post PGY-1 education (if you're interested in getting board certified):

The minimum distribution of educational experience must include:
(1) 12 months of adult orthopaedics
(2) 12 months of fractures/trauma
(3) Six months of children’s orthopaedics
(4) Six months of basic and/or clinical specialties
Experience may be received in two or more subject areas concurrently. Concurrent or integrated programs must allocate time by proportion of experience.

Replied by chee68 on topic thanks. i was told peds was
thanks.
i was told peds was the only true requirement, but again, that was just hearsay.
thanks for the info. it seems a lot of programs do the 6 month thing, because it is difficult to get 6 months of that particular subspecialty. the other requirements you listed....there can be a lot of overlap with each subspecialty so it doesn't become an issue ("adult" ortho)

anyway, i think it's weird that my post got 130-some views but only 1 reply. i'm just a resident trying to see what other programs do, as to possibly make some changes where i am. plus, i know some programs go to "other" places to get their peds, so i thought i'd get some of my fellow residents input......

Replied by on topic My program split the peds
My program split the peds rotation into two 3 month blocks. Your first experience was as a PGIII and the last rotation as a PGV.

forgot....
we basically do 2 month blocks, and it varies which pgy-year we do them. in the past, the 4's and 5's had to "catch up" and do a lot of peds to get their 6 months b/c somewhere along the line they got behind.
