So I'm a third year general surgery resident who is quitting to go into Fam Med and then do a sports med fellowship. I'm wondering with the background I have if after I'm done, I can join an orthopaedic practice and do clinic/ and assist in cases, any body know what kind of opportunities you can get?

Thanks

Replied by on topic Some ortho groups do add
Some ortho groups do add PC Sports med physicians to their groups to help increase patient volume without adding competition to surgical cases. PAs also function in the same way. You are actually more valuable in the clinic than in the OR even though they can bill some cases with an assist fee. You can chat with the groups about assisting, but I suspect they would want you in the clinic and maybe covering some teams if that's available.

Thanks for the response. I hope that while you're in clinic and in cases that as an MD your salary and degree of responsibility are much higher than if you just join the group as a physician assistant. Otherwise, I should just go spend another four years doing another ortho residency--but talking to other FP sports med docs that's not the case. How do you feel?

Replied by on topic Your salary should be much
Your salary should be much higher than a PA since your billings will be higher, assuming you work out a nice deal with the group that hires you. If you truly love surgery, you may want to consider getting into an orthopedic residency, but as you know that can be a tough road.
