Best State to Practice was created by bonesawin
I'm an ortho res starting to look for jobs and I don't know what state to start my job hunt. Does anybody have advice on the best state/region to be an ortho MD in regards to

(1) need for orthopods/market saturation
(2) compensation
(3) malpractice/legal environment
(4) anything else you can think of

Thanks in advance

According to the AAOS the states with the lowest orthopedic surgeon density are:

1. MS- 5.48 surgeons per 100K pop.
2. AR- 5.75 surgeons per 100K pop.
3. WV- 5.79 surgeons per 100K pop.
4. TX- 5.93 surgeons per 100K pop.
5. MI- 6.03 surgeons per 100K pop.

In my opinion, Texas has the best overall appeal. Texas has a thriving economy, no state income tax, and med mal reform. I know there are other states that have other attractive qualities, so I would encourage you to go on as many interviews as possible. Hope this helps.

FYI you can find a completed workforce study by visiting www.orthopedicrecruiting.com

Good luck
