Hi everyone, As interview season approaches I wanted to put some basic info out there about Buffalo's residency program, especially since our website is out of date and is getting updated soon. Hoping that this will help people get an idea of what our program is like...
-Like all other programs we have the 6 months of ortho as an intern. The other 6mo are: EM, anesthesia, trauma surg (2), vascular, trauma ICU.
-the 6mo of ortho includes 3 at the level 1 trauma center (ECMC), and 3 at buffalo general hospital (primary/revision joints/some trauma)
-Level 1 trauma center, a lot of high energy trauma and a good amount of "penetrating" trauma as well
-Multiple Attendings representing each specialty
-All rotations take place in Buffalo (no temporary moves for a few months)
-Great amount of autonomy
-Graduates finishing with a very high number of cases (3500+)
-Graduates matching into very competitive fellowship positions
-Large amount of operative experience even as an intern
-5 residents per year, fellows almost never bumping residents from cases
-A mix of attendings (some very well known and some less well known)
-3 research projects required throughout all 5 years
I went to med school in Buffalo and really wanted to stick around so I am a little biased but ultimately I think Buffalo is a great place to train. If you want a place that you will, without a doubt, be able to operate on day 1 after graduation, Buffalo is a great choice. We have a really good mix of residents, none of which take themselves too seriously. Let me know if you have a questions about the program.
