Second Looks

I'm sure there is a thread out there about this but I haven't been able to find it with search function, so if there is link me to it.

Wanted to get some advice/opinion on second looks. Does it at all affect rank positions (I've heard many programs rank soon after the interview)? Or does it depend more on the program.

It probably depends on the program. I was advised by one resident when I interviewed at a certain program that a second look would be beneficial. I think it's also good for you if you come away from the interview not getting a feel for certain aspects.

I doubt it helps. One program mentioned at least 5 times during the interview that they really want people to do second looks. I worked with only one resident and an attending who didn't have any part in resident selection. If you're strapped for cash and time, then I wouldn't recommend it.

I am a PGY 5...this is just my opinion.

I dont think that most programs will move you up on the rank list based on going back. I think most places have a pretty objective ranking system for looking at applicants...I would not do a second look because you think it would make a program rank you higher.....I doubt this matters much....

I would do a second look if you think this program left some questions unanswered and you feel that this is a program you would rank very highly.....and the second look may change the way YOU make your rank list....

My overall impressions is that every year the med students try to analyze this way too much.....this is not counting cards....there is a certain amount of randomness to the match and where you end up is ultimately affected by decisions made by other med students and the programs....unless you are ranked to match somewhere.....

If in your heart you think this place may be right for you....do a second look...but i you are doing a second look just to be noticed and maybe ranked high by the program....I doubt this will change much......

Places know who they want and who they dont....unless you are right on the fence this will make no difference....

Best on luck...I know this is a very stressful time.....buy a nice bottle of scotch for match day with the money you would have spent on a second look////thats my advice

Duke "requires" a second look to even be considered ranked in their top 8. They like to use the term "strongly recommended" or such and will call you post-interview if they are interested in you to "encourage" you to come back, but don't let anyone tell you that a second look is optional if you really want to go there.
