Its interesting to read 'info' regarding the Mayo program from people that seem a little like haters. From a current resident I couldn't be happier with my decision. Early operative experience, I have done more than 20 of my friends at programs all the way from Harvard to small community programs. So whoever said we did less is simply not true.
We do not have a large volume when it comes to trauma but we do alot more from in house pathologic fractures. In the end, the operation is the same. We know how to fix everything as well as anyone in major trauma centers. We don't get killed on Trauma which was a plus for me. I came from a medical school which was trauma heavy. I would rather learn more elective cases than trauma any day and it seems that trauma heavy programs use their chiefs as labor. As far as rochester sucking, it does suck. But we have driven up to the twin cities plenty and hang out at peoples houses frequently. It is a family program but my single friends are also killing it. Rochester is 10: 1 m to f ratio. You have 5 years to become the best you can be, location did not matter to me. Mayo is consistently ranked 1 or 2 for the last 15 years in US world news. The resources are endless. Its amazing to operate and chill with staff and then read for a case or the OITE and see his name on the book. Its like having Butch for your golf coach.

Just for the record, a 10:1 male:female ratio is pretty much a monstrous sausage party. I understand, though, that Mayo is a great place to train, so I would highly consider it. Personally, my feeling is that training at any top 20 program is a privilege. Just getting to pursue an Ortho career at ANY insitution is quite the blessing, so be happy! Although I still can't get over 10:1, slim pickings for a single guy!
