How to handle a rejection/no interview from a program

Just a quick question for any attendings/program directors who follow the site. Is there any utility in writing a thank you for considering my application to programs who do not offer you an interview? I know that this is an exceptionally busy time of year for all the PDs and Chairmen so I don't know if this would be beneficial in any way or just cluttering up an email inbox. Thanks

Its not done and I highly doubt it will even be noticed. Something that I have heard that helps is calling or writing about how much you really would like to have an interview at their program in particular. This has helped some waitlisted folks in the past (and even one person who got rejected), get an interview. this is a crazy process overall

Yeah, it's definitely a crazy process. That was the basis for my question cause I knew that phone calls had allegedly made a difference...

It probably doesn't make a difference. However, if the program has a "wait list" and you send a note or email and have an attending call or write on your behalf that could put you potentially higher on the list (of course assuming that you're already a competitive applicant).
