I have read on this forum that in prior years some reapplicants have been successful in matching into PGY2 positions after doing a prelim year in General Surgery. According to ACGME, Effective July 1, 2013, PGY-1 residents (Orthopedic) must have six months of orthopaedic surgery rotations, as well as six months of non-orthopaedic surgery rotations which most current General Surgery prelims will not be able to complete. Does this mean you can no longer move into a PGY2 spot after completing a GS prelim intern year? Are reapplicants only able to match into PGY1 spots?
