I finished a pgy 1 prelim general surgery year, then 2 years of research and now i found out monday that I didnt match. I found out I was one person away on rank list (they thought for sure they would go much lower). It seems ortho keeps getting harder to get into each year and I am not sure I am ready to give up either after coming so close.

I am debating on what to do next and the only thing I haven't tried is doing a house officer position. I was wondering if anyone could share their experience with these positions. I imagine when the rare 2nd year position becomes open that this makes you much more competitive.

It sounds like a good idea. But be very careful where you go. There is an opening in University of Missouri, with Dr. Moed, it is a junior trauma fellowship apply there, you have search it on this website

"Be very careful where you go." Can anyone speak to what they have heard about the various HO positions that are out there? Good/bad experience?

I think they mean that you have to pick a place with a proven track record of getting people spots. The house officer year is essentially a sink-or-swim position - it allows you to prove that you're capable and can fit into the residency. If the attendings don't go to bat for you though, it means absolutely nothing to all the other programs you apply to. You need to go somewhere that has had success matching people. Try to get contact info for the previous house officers and ask them if they felt like they were truly supported by their attendings.

I personally just finished a house officer position and couldn't be happier with where I ended up. If you want to discuss it, feel free to PM me.

I'd highly recommend against it. I've seen peoples' career end from HO commitments because of politics, false promises and unrealistic expectations.
