I'm pretty sure the Tri-state area is NY/NJ/CT

Did you ever think that there may be more than one "tristate" area-- Like every place where a corner of 3 states (any three states) meet? It is a phrase people use all over the country for their respective tristate areas. The dude didn't even put "the tristate area"-- he specified which one.
