Prelim trying for ortho was created by orthogater1
My prelim is only giving me one month of ortho and one of NSG (spine). I've got a first authorship coming out in spine this year, any chance programs will consider me for a pgy2 without the 3 months of ortho?

Replied by on topic I don't say that it
I don't say that it is impossible to get into PGY-II with only one month of ortho in your PGY-I, but it will be very hard. Last July, there was a PGY-II spot available in Ohio. More than 100 people who had completed or were completing the PGY-I had applied. One should assume that program directors would consider those who meet the exact ACGME requirements for PGY-I before those who don't.

I think you should talk to the PD and let him know that your intention is to meet the requirements for first year ortho.

Good Luck.

Replied by on topic 3 mo is a maximum
3 mo is a maximum not a req. gsurg year will give you more than you think (trauma, SICU, vasc, NSG) , but you should ask PD for ICU time, cuz it sucks to have to make that up. you can also submit your sched to the ABOS and they will give you credit for comparable rotations. agree that it makes you more marketable, but you can do a gsurg categorical year and still get a 2 spot.

cheers
