Replied by on topic I have never seen any
I have never seen any army hospital, which takes an IMG for Ortho Residency. At the time, I was applying for residency I checked with every military hospital, neither one had an IMG Ortho resident. Other thing is to join US military, one must be a US Citizen. I don't know if an army hospital accepts an Australian Citizen.

I am wondering if you know any army hospital which takes IMGs for Ortho?

Replied by on topic My understanding is the army
My understanding is the army ortho programs don't take anyone that isn't HPSP or USUHS. I considered applying to some, since I was still enlisted in the army at the time. When I called one place they told me the above. As for needing to be a US citizen to join the army, that is just not true. In fact, joining can be a good way for someone seeking citizenship to expedite their application. However, they do want people who are willing to become citizens (they have a rule that you can't re-enlist after a certain period if you still aren't a citizen, not sure how that would work for an officer).

Not that any of that helps the OP.

Replied by on topic skimut--you have no earthly idea
skimut--you have no earthly idea what you are talking about with regard to service and residency in the American military. And your remark is disrespectful to all of the men and women who not only busted their butts to get an ortho spot, but who have committed to defend their country for the next 4-8yrs.

Oz--good luck dude. my hubby and i will be apart for the next 4yrs so i can finish my residency. i hope it works out for you and the missus.

cheers.

Replied by on topic My apologies
Firegirl....if you are in the Military please accept my gratitude for your service...there has been few times in USA history where the Medical Corps has been needed more....thank you for serving.....however as a Lt. Col. in the Army reserve which I am a complete volunteer on my part, I have been mobilized every other year for the past 8 years...I have served in Landstuhl, Germany...Walter Reed...WBAMC, El Paso and BAMC San Antonio...prior to that I Graduated Summa CL from a well known Military College, and recieved an Army Schoolarship for Medicine......So Yes I know exactly what I am talking about when I talk of Military Medicine....you may have busted your but for an Ortho Residency, but the Military is well known for letting Ortho wanabees do GMO positions for a couple of years until something opens up...this just decreases the expense the Army has (no "Pro" pay is paid while you are a GMO) while prolonging their Obligation to the Military. As for the Military Match it is very different from civillian match in that if you were a marginal medical student and if you do your GMO time and Get Glowing OERs (Brown nosing mostly) then you can probably get a position at some point...I don't think that anyone who has been through this system will disagree with me on this issue.....Thus my previous comment....It is also my opinion that right now in the Army GME Ortho Programs in particular....that the number of OIF casualties is overwhelming the case logs of Ortho residents preventing them from a well rounded Ortho expierence....I was amazed to see at Walter Reed Attendings scurring around for the ACLs, Shoulders, and joints...to improve their own skills while they would barely stick their heads in the ID washout rooms...believe me i have more stories here (not pretty).

So I am apologetic that your reading of my comment somehow set wrong with you...keep up the good work...it was very rewarding for me to give time to these OIF guys esp. the Double Amputees. There are around 571 amputees of some form as of April 1, 2007. God Bless! And Grats!!
