Categorical PGY-2 Position Available at Lenox Hill Hospital

A categorical orthopedic residency position has become open at Lenox Hill Hospital on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, available immediately. Current and rising PGY-2 residents may be considered.

The spot represents an opening in our current PGY-2 class, and is available to be filled immediately by a current PGY-2.

If the spot is filled by someone who will start July 1st, the ideal candidate would be a rising PGY-3.

Applicants beginning their PGY-2 year in July may also be considered. If they so desire, these applicants can also be considered for a non-categorical PGY-2 Ortho position offered annually by Lenox Hill. Residents who have completed this "house officer" position typically place into advanced categorical Ortho spots.

To the best of my knowlege, Lenox Hill has not yet selected a resident to fill the opening in our current PGY-2 class. The optimal candidate will be a well-qualified rising PGY-3. Whether candidates at other levels of training will be considered is unclear to me, but it cannot hurt to express your interest.

Can someone please explain what a "categorical" position is?

It means that the position is designed to last until you are finished with your training. This is as opposed to a preliminary position that is just meant to last one year with no guarantee of future training (although people take these spots in the hope it will help them secure a future training spot).
