Prior to getting on my soap box, I wish you the best of luck on your endeavors. Now, getting into ortho is a beeeaach. When looking at research fellowships/positions, investigate the track record as to how many of the previous guys got into ortho doing the same research that you plan on doing. Most places will cold-heartedly milk you for what you are worth and continue to string you along for years without thinking twice on how it effects your life and family. They will make you all kinds of promises verbally but will never put it down on paper. In essence, there is no sense of accountability/obligation or recourse for them screwing you for years. My advice to you would be to continue with your residency and try to do research at your local ortho residency office. This truly is crappy advice but look at the alternative. You drop out of an accredited EM residency spend the next few years doing research and still have no guarantee that someone will give you a position. Atleast in about 2 years you will be making 200-300K working 12-12hour shift and moving forward in your life instead of simply treading water. Hell man, you have a better odds in a game of craps. Ortho is a wonderful exciting specialty and I wouldn't want to do anything else in medicine, but I see people who get screwed for 2,3,4,5,6+ years and still not get into a position. You will witness stupid
interns advance to their chief years before you even get in. These f--kers are cold hearted except when it comes to their patients. Because the recourse is a fat lawsuit to light the fire in their tails. Again good luck and cheers.
