EM RESIDENT WANTING TO SWITCH INTO ORTHO

Hello all-
I am an EM resident at a highly competitive program who realized that emergency medicine is not for me. I find myself attracted to all orthopedic issues and miss the operating room. I am looking to switch into a PGY-1 ortho position (i.e.- i am expecting to re-do my intern year). I am willing and fully expecting to take a year or 2 off to do research, but obviously, a paid research position would be better than a non-paying one. Therefore, I have a few questions]

This is an old post about an EM resident wanting to switch into ortho---I never heard any replies---and now I am in the same boat. How could I go about this?? Is there still a whole funding issue? What are the logistics of trying to "apply" and get letters etc. while already in residency? We are all clean slates as an intern anyway--there's nothing broke that can't be fixed just by doing one year in another program and then desiring to start clean in ortho---in fact I think it could make a new ortho PGY-1 an even better intern for already having done an internship the year prior. Can someone please offer advice on this?? Thanks!
