Program Review
Staff / Faculty / Chairman
lots of attendings, most pretty nice and helpful, but a few that are rather intense. Some will teach, other completely ignore the students and even occasionally the residents. PD is great to work with and very enthusiastic about the program.
Didactics / Teaching
daily didactics, very thorough, best I saw on rotations, though makes for a longer day. decent attending turnout.
Operating Experience
tons of OR time from year one. def a strong point. Lots of bread and butter ortho, best joint hospital in PA, limited trauma. expect to be in OR everyday as student or resident.
Clinic Experience
limited. half day a week, though residents can get their own cases through the clinic.
Research Opportunities
not much clinical research, though all residents involved in some way.
Residents
a variety of personalities, though all very nice and fun when you get to know them. obvious hierarchy, younger residents get reamed when they make a mistake, but all are friends and take care of each other. 5th years very well trained
Lifestyle
bad, work long hours. a little better by 5th year. but due to lots of OR time. i often worked 4 am to 10 pm multiple days in a row.
Location / Housing
town is ok, there is outdoors stuff to do nearby, small downtown. some crime for a small town.
Limitations
very little trauma. almost too much time on didactics. bad lifestyle. a bit much like being in the military.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
good rotation, learned a lot and got a lot of time in the OR. if you like sports, joints and scopes then this is a great program for you.
Qualification
I rotated as a medical student at this program
Date of Rotation
2012
