Program Review

Staff / Faculty / Chairman
Overall everyone was really nice. No pimping. Dr.McInerney was very accessible, the residents make sure you scrub with him as much as possible. The attendings in clinic were cool to work with.
Didactics / Teaching
Tuesday morning is the weekly department conference. There are usually several lectures either by residents, attendings, or visiting lecturers. Every Friday morning is dedicated didactic time for the residents, they have lectures, anatomy lab, and do review questions.
Operating Experience
This is the greatest strength of the program. The residents operate like crazy. The seniors are very comfortable in the OR and are expected to be able to do any case. Even the second years are in the operating room all the time. I rotated at three different hospitals and operated more here than at any other place.
Clinic Experience
There is one full day of clinic on Tuesdays and a short pediatrics clinic on Fridays. Don't know if they ever get to go to the private offices.
Research Opportunities
Not a strength of the program, but it seems like the residents get their required projects done pretty easily. I don't think they have a dedicated research rotation or anything.
Residents
I liked everyone I met, everyone was very easy going, no scutwork. All the residents seem to really get along. They're all in a kickball league together.
Lifestyle
About average for ortho programs based on what I've seen so far. They stay pretty late on some of the busy OR days. From what I understand, everyone gets two weekends off every month.
Location / Housing
Paterson is the dumps but there are nicer areas around it. They also cover another hospital 20 minutes away that is smaller and in a much nicer location. Everyone lives around the area in various suburbs. A lot of the residents live in Hoboken. No on campus housing.
Limitations
The campus is under renovation. I had to park several blocks away. They also operate at another hospital near by a couple times a week, it seems hard on the residents driving back and forth.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
I really enjoyed my 4 weeks here and will be ranking the program highly. Wish it was in a bit nicer location and a little bit more academic but overall a very good program with a very strong operative experience.

Qualification

I rotated as a medical student at this program
