Program Review

Staff / Faculty / Chairman
Dr. Haidukewych is very motivated to grow the program into a program with great hands-on learning and with great research opportunities. Dr. Haidukewych brough in Dr. Koval as a great research resource for the program. The core trauma/general faculty are very busy, which leads to early operative experience. We work extensively with community Orthopedic surgeons for Sports, Foot and Ankle, Recon and Hand rotations. They are great teachers in the OR and let us learn a lot of bread and butter orthopedics. We work with the pediatric faculty closely during our six months on rotation, and also when on call.
Didactics / Teaching
Lectures are mostly resident led, and we have a Trauma attending at almost all conferences. Specifically, Sports conferences have excellent input from faculty, who religiously attend our didactic sessions. The pediatrics faculty give the lectures to the residents on a weekly basis, and are well attended. Hand lectures also have good faculty input. We have frequent case conferences for Recon, Trauma, and sports. We have no specific Shoulder and Elbow faculty at this time.
Operating Experience
We operate a lot. Roughly half way through third year I have scrubbed 581 cases. Chief residents (and sometimes the junior residents) here operate way beyond their expected level, and will generally lead the Trauma fellow through cases when they first arrive. Our strongest operative experiences is with Trauma.
Clinic Experience
We have good clinic experience, especially on the community rotations. Typically we are in the office 2 to 3 days per week on the private rotations. However, we usually spend the minimum required time in the clinic while on the general/Trauma rotations because the trauma load is busy (As residents, we support operative experience above clinic for trauma).
Research Opportunities
With frequently published faculty in Trauma, Peds, and Sports, there are many research opportunities available. All of our research is clinically based. Research has not been heavily emphasized until the past 3 or 4 years. I am working on 2 projects currently, one on sports and one on Recon/trauma.
Residents
The residents that are here work hard and also have good balance. The majority are married, and 3 residents have kids. We have great camaraderie, and often get together to watch sports/etc. outside of work. We generally emphasize clinical expertise and operative skill.
Lifestyle
This is a front-loaded program where you are working very hard covering ER call for a Level 1 Adult and Peds hospital for 2.5 yrs. While on trauma rotations we are very busy, but our overall lifestyle is good. We have great camaraderie, and often get together to watch sports outside of work. Some residents often surf, do triathlons, fish and wakeboard.
Location / Housing
Orlando is a sprawling city with many areas that are good to live. Many affordable options are available in the Downtown area, or you can look in the suburbs for a house with bigger size. There is a ton to do here, and the Gulf and Atlantic are not far away.
Limitations
We are growing our research emphasis while not all the residents are interested in research & academics. I personally like research and want to teach in the future--there is a place for both here. We want to increase core faculty attendance at lectures/journal club.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
This is a great residency that will let you be very prepared for going into general orthopedics or academics. We have faculty that very well known, and are a great asset for research and publications.

Qualification

I am a current resident of this program.
