A virtual reality headset is rapidly moving from a piece of technological novelty to becoming a valuable surgical tool. Orthopaedic surgeons have harnessed the power of Microsoft’s HoloLens to guide them during the messy and high risk field of spinal surgery. The work of two pioneering doctors from Brazil who are using the device to help with a common procedure called spinal fusion, where screws are used to fix parts of the spine, has been captured on video. Warning: contains footage of actual surgery. Dr Henrique Lampert, an orthopaedic spine surgeon working in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and Dr Bruno Gobbato have found the headset can guide them to place the pedicle screws far more precisely.
