Dr. Stone at the University of Kentucky is seeking a highly motivated 3rd year medical student interested in pursuing a yearlong clinical research fellowship with an emphasis in patient-reported outcomes after knee injury and identifying factors that influence the progression of posttraumatic osteoarthritis. Dr. Stone is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky. He specializes in conditions of the shoulder, elbow, and knee, with an additional practice focus in cartilage repair and restoration and ortho-biologics. He serves as the director of the Center for Cartilage Repair and Restoration. Applicants should have a personal interest in knee injuries, functional testing, and rehabilitation. The fellow will be working directly with Austin V. Stone, MD, PhD and Caitlin Conley, PhD. The position will also provide the applicant the opportunity to work with residents, fellows, research faculty, and clinical faculty at the University of Kentucky. The research fellow should expect multiple publications and an enhanced competitive resume for Orthopaedic Surgery match. Research fellows have additional access to lectures, Grand Rounds, and cadaveric labs and workshops.
Job Duties:
1. Hands-on experience collecting patient outcome data in both the clinical setting and the operating room
2. Collection of biospecimen data for associated research protocols
3. Submission and management of IRB protocols
4. Assist the research coordinators and research faculty on clinical projects in the department
5. Participate with drafting, editing, or submitting projects including abstracts, manuscripts, multimedia projects, and book chapters.
6. Assist with coordinating and setting up cadaver labs for residents/fellows.
Qualifications:
1. A background in musculoskeletal disorders with a desire to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery
2. Previous experience in research
3. Very well organized with good computer skills
4. Good oral and written communication skills
5. Independent and efficient worker
6. Strong scholastic performance
7. Statistical experience is a bonus but not required.
The position will be 12-months beginning approximately June 2023 through June 2024 with a monthly stipend.
