Jeremy Lewis, MD, an assistant neurosurgery professor, will serve as principal investigator. 3. Dr. Lewis completed his complex cranial and skull base surgery fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. 4. The University of New Mexico Hospital joins 29 other clinical sites participating in the INSPIRE study. 5. President Barack Obama’s $1 billion commitment to make American manufacturing more competitive took another step forward Friday when Carnegie Mellon University and the U.S. Department of Defense announced plans for a $253 million robotics research initiative based in Pittsburgh. The center — funded by 220 government, industry and academic sources — is the latest of 14 manufacturing institutes that are researching technologies like 3-D printing medical implants that will help broken bones heal faster; working on new, streamlined ways of manufacturing lightweight metals; and developing breakthrough fabrics capable of storing energy and monitoring the health of the person who wears them.

Here are four things to know: 1. This patent application covers Aurora's implant family of ZIP ISPs as well as its first polyaxial implant design. 2. The company's new polyaxial interspinous devices offers "full polyaxial maneuverability of the implant components in difficult situations during minimally invasive fusion cases," said Laszlo Garamszegi, Aurora Spine's chief technology officer. 3. This patent represents Aurora Spine's second allowed U.S. patent. 4. The company also has other pending U.S. and international patent applications.

A top JNJ executive explains why he thinks the company’s offering has an edge. Marie Thibault Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies (JJMDC) is jumping feet first into the value-based care environment with its new CareAdvantage offering. The broad program, announced on January 9, aims to help hospital customers achieve the ultimate goal of value-based care: improving outcomes, increasing patient satisfaction, and reducing the cost of care. According to a company press release announcing the launch, CareAdvantage is designed to offer customers insights in a wide variety of therapy areas, interpretation of patient behaviors in order to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction, and optimization of operations in order to reduce care costs.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I recall for Greatbatch Medical Standard Offset Cup Impactors with POM-C Handle. The Standard Offset Cup Impactors are reusable handheld devices used during hip joint replacement surgeries to implant cups in the hip socket (acetabulum).
