The Johns Hopkins Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Trauma, invites applications for the 2026–2027 Boucher Orthopaedic Trauma Research Fellowship, a funded, year-long opportunity for outstanding medical students interested in pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery. The fellowship offers structured research training in clinical trials, outcomes research, anatomic and cadaveric studies, along with meaningful clinical exposure in a high-volume academic trauma setting.

The fellow will work directly with Dr. Babar Shafiq, MD, MSPT, FAOA, Director of the Orthopaedic Bone Health Center and Associate Residency Program Director, and will participate in manuscript development, IRB submission, trauma database management, and poster and podium presentations at national meetings.
Areas of research include special topics in trauma, bone health evaluation, robotics and biomechanics, and emerging technologies.
In addition to research responsibilities, the fellow will gain valuable clinical exposure through the orthopaedic trauma outpatient clinic, operating room observation, patient enrollment for clinical studies, and weekly academic conferences including fracture conference, grand rounds, journal club, and dedicated faculty mentorship meetings.

The fellowship includes a stipend, Johns Hopkins EHP medical benefits, and may include support for travel related to national presentations.

Eligibility:
- Applicants should be U.S. citizens attending a U.S. medical school, in good academic standing, with a strong interest in orthopaedic surgery and USMLE Step 1 completed.
- Students completing their 3rd or 4th year are encouraged to apply; in rare circumstances, uniquely qualified students finishing their 2nd year may be considered.
