Really? Why do they send some email and some snail mail? Congrats to you anyway on interviewing at HSS.

sorry for the confusion. that message was supposed to go into the rejection thread.

i was actually rejected by HSS on 12/10 via snail mail

so, i guess the pattern is email = happiness
