Definately some tense moments leading up to noon, but quite relieved now. I was looking at the regional match stats and saw 16 open spots. I'm assuming the 8 in the central region are for wayne state, but does anyone have any thoughts on the 8 openings in the northeast?

TornMeniscus says he presumes that 8 unmatched positions are those from Wayne State. What happened at Wayne State that would cause such an assumption?

I believe that Wayne State didn't interview anyone this year. I don't know any of the specifics, though.

Where are people getting the regional match statistics?

Wayne didn't interview because the ortho department is having a conflict with the detroit medical center. From what I hear, it is likely the program will close/be seriously restructured. There is a rumor that they would try to scramble 6 of their 8 spots if they get approval from the rrc and resolve the contract dispute, but I don't have any solid info on this. I was just curious about the northeast spots because I hadn't heard about any other program closings and 8 spots seems like a lot.

...the match stats are from the "my reports" section of the nrmp website

I ran into two Wayne State applicants on the trail and they had conflicting views of what's going on. The first said that the ortho department was definitely shut down by the CEO of DMC due to personal issues between him/her and the ortho people. Therefore, all 40 residents are SOL. The second said that he didn't know exactly what was going on, but that he didn't believe the program was interviewing this year. So, it sounds to me like we can safely assume that the 8 in that region are from WSU/DMC.

As for the NE, I'm in this area and I have no idea what's going on or where those slots are. Haven't heard anything...

I matched, btw... congrats to everyone

I am pretty sure that the 8 from the central region are indeed b/c of wayne state, that is the exact number of spots they have.

WTF is up with general surg only having one spot unfilled?? Thats crazy. Must be a lot of people liking the 80 hour rule.

I'm thinking that the 8 spots are in programs that applied for and were granted another spot (for 80 hr work week reasons) and then decided maybe not to match and fill it. BUT good luck to those who are still in the hunt, I really have no idea what those spots are. BTW I also matched, looking forward to find out where and with whom.

I'm in, baby! Woo Hoo! I'm pretty jacked. Congrats to all others who matched too.

So for some reason when I got onto the website finally (after 10 minutes of cursing and incessantly pushing the refresh button), I called my wife and yelled "Woo Hoo!" Homer Simpson-style four times. Don't know why, it just kept coming out. Anxious for match day!

Congrats to all. The hard work and late nights have finally paid off for you all. Welcome to the greatest subspecialty of them all. Ortho is freakin' awesome, and even on my worst rotation (spine), I'm still happy when I wake up in the morning because I know I'm gonna FIX somebody today. Good luck on Thursday.
