What would you recommend are the best books to read/study during intern year? My 3 months of ortho are not until the end and I would like to be as ready as possible.

Thanks

As an aside, do ortho interns take the OITEs? What year do you start taking them?

Thanks!

Manual of Orthopaedics by Swiontkowski and Stovits (lippincot, Williams, Wilkins) is a great book.

At most programs (all that I know of), interns take the OITE. But most interns don't care how they do because the department doesn't care.

Most programs are having interns take the OITE, but when you take it as an intern you are considered a PGY0 and it does not count in the Ortho program's overall score. I would recommend OKU or Miller's Review, both widely used as a primary source for OITE. The yellow journal has excellent review articles that are appropriate for juniors.

For those less familiar, I believe MDforhire was referring to the Journal of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons () which I agree is an outstanding resource. Intern year it is probably worthwhile to focus on fractures/trauma and basic science for your reading as trauma is something that everyone is expected to be comfortable with early on and the Academy is focusing on basic science more & more for the OITE and boards.
