Hey everyone. Initially I thought I would only have time to do two 4-week away rotations, but I just found out I have an extra two weeks available. Would programs scoff at the idea of a student only spending 2 weeks at their program vs not going there at all for an away rotation? Will it hurt my chances by doing a 2 weeker as compared to just going there (hopefully) for an interview? I've heard varying advice about this subject.

I think that it is very program dependent. Don't hesitate to email programs that you are interested in and get their feedback on what they think about 2 weekers. I initially tried to do a 2 week rotation, contacted a couple of programs, but decided not to later. 1 of the 2 approved it. I had a friend do 2 weeks at Cincinnati, another do 2 weeks at Geisenger, another do 2 weeks at Toledo. Another applicant I know did three 2 week rotations and got interviews at all three places. I seems that the more academic programs don't allow it. But I think it is worth showing your interest and getting your name out there too. Just be careful to not burn any bridges.

I don't think it has to do with community vs academic programs. Simply communicate with the program coordinator and find out if the specific program you're interested can accommodate you - I know of many students and programs who are able to do this (even 1-week rotations) - of course you usually cannot receive credit for this type of rotation but that's usually not a motivating reason anyway.

Good luck --
