I'm an MSIII already working the away rotation ropes. Have a few ?'s though and I know you MSIVs have (all) the answers.

It's my understanding that it's poor form to apply for more aways than you have time to do and then take your best offers ie cherry pick. So my ? is how do you make sure that you get the ones you want when you want them? Or is it just not that simple?

To clarify perhaps, here's a scenario. I apply to two different programs and give them my 2 choices of time preferences. They both come back and both offer me the same month to rotate at their respective programs. How do you navigate this situation?

Any input/answers are appreciated.

fixation...

you are on top of things already... you should have no problem at this point getting your choice. I applied at the end of march and had no problem.

good luck...

Thanks mayday. Anyone else have any strategies or advice on how to best get the aways you want when you want while being fair and not burning bridges.

I would probably ask the secretary what the chances of getting the month you wanted was (compared to last year). Otherwise, I would just be really polite about it and explain there were scheduling conflicts. Most of the time you deal with one of the secretaries when scheduling aways, so as long as you don't wait until the month before to cancel, I don't think you will burn any bridges with the surgeons. But definitely research hard which programs you want to do an away at. I think it is a huge advantage come applying time.
