I am an older student who is married and would like to have a family at some point. I realize that you cannot choose your hours during residency, but I would like to know what options are available after residency. Is it really realistic or practicle to think one could work 40-50 hours a week with no trauma call.

This question has been answered numerous times. Your life after residency is what you make of it. There are hundreds of jobs across the country with different call, hours, etc... You just need to pick the one that fits you best and that is in an area you would like to live in. What you see in residency and medical school is not the typical lifestyle of the private practice orthopedist.

Here is some statistics from the most recent poll of orthopods available at

Orthopaedists spend, on average, approximately fifty-six hours per week practicing orthopaedics; those 44 and under work about sixty hours those in their early to mid 60s, about forty-nine hours.
