Dr. Khaled Kebaish is inviting highly motivated medical students interested in gaining orthopaedic surgery research experience to apply to the John P. Kostuik, M.D., Spine Research Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic Surgery Department during the 2023 - 2024 academic year. This one-year research position is intended for 3rd or 4th-year medical students interested in gaining additional exposure to the field and improving their research experience. The fellowship allows the participant to work closely with Dr. Kebaish and other spine faculty members. Research focuses on Adult Spinal Deformity (ASD), with involvement in prospective and retrospective studies using single-institution, multi-center, and national databases.  
  
Responsibilities of a research fellow will include:  
  • Assisting with clinic duties (2 days/week), such as enrolling patients into prospective trials and following-up with active enrollees.  
  • Drafting, submitting and maintaining IRB proposals.  
  • Work closely with Spine Surgery Division faculty.  
  • Managing departmental database.  
  • Preparation and submission of research manuscripts.  
Ideal characteristics of a fellowship applicant will be:  
  • Experience with data management and statistical analysis.  
  • Highly organized and motivated.  
  • Good interpersonal skills.  
  • Ability to Self-manage.  
During the fellowship, you will have the opportunity to participate in academic activities of the Spine Surgery division and the Orthopaedic Surgery Department.  
 
Past fellows have been successful in authoring multiple manuscripts and in presenting their research at several orthopaedic and spine-surgery national and international conferences.  
 
Applications will be selected based on their academic record, previous experience, interpersonal and organizational skills. Interviews will be conducted by video.
