Tampa General has a very busy trauma service and receives hand trauma transfers from all over the state of Florida.
The experience will introduce the fellows to the full gamut of hand and
upper extremity trauma including revascularization, replantation,
fracture, and soft tissue problems of the upper extremity.
The busy
elective schedule at Tampa General includes adult and pediatric
reconstruction of the upper extremities encompassing the broad scope of
procedures from free tissue transfers to total wrist arthroplasty. Shriners Hospital, Tampa
houses a busy referral based practice involving the entire spectrum of
pediatric upper extremity pathology, including a mature cerebral palsy
service, a brachial plexus birth palsy service, and a busy congenital
hand and post-traumatic reconstruction practice. The FOI Outpatient Surgery Center will provide a comprehensive experience in hand surgery and also hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder arthroscopy. Fellows
will rotate among three busy hand surgeons. The Foundation for
Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE) has a fully equipped
biomechanics lab, arthroscopy lab and research personnel to assist in
these activities. The fellows are required to complete at least one
research project during their year. Qualified applicants should be a
graduate of an ACGME or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Canada accredited in program in general, orthopaedic or plastic
surgery.
